Fake tan instantly gives the optical illusion that you’re slimmer and toned. But we don’t want the folks at home to know we got our bodies out a bottle, we want them to think we’ve got a nice, natural tan as we spent the summer livin’ it up in Ibiza, somehow, without them even noticing… Hmm… But basically, we don’t want to look like streaky bacon or that we’ve been tangoed so here’s some tips to get the perfect fake tan…

Exfoliate!!! Not only does it remove dead skin cells to provide an even base for the tan, it also smoothes and softens the skin and helps avoid/get rid of the enemy aka, cellulite. Use a large, bristled body brush in circular motions and in long strokes towards your heart to get blood pumping. Pay particular attention to knees, elbows and ankles as the skin tends to be as rough as Vicky Pollard. So, have a good scrub every other day before showering, as over-brushing can leave skin red raw and sore.
If you want a natural, light tan, especially for those with paler skin, mix fake tan with a moisturiser. It makes it easier to apply and avoids streaks. Once again, your knees, ankles and elbows like a bit of moisture! Bless ‘em.
Don’t apply fake tan just after shaving, as it WILL streak, leave a few hours to let skin settle.
It’s best to apply fake tan at night as you won’t risk getting rained on, rubbing it, or your work mates noticing you slowly turning it to a Terry’s Chocolate Orange as the day goes on.
In the morning, if you still find the odd streak use a fake tan remover wipe to blend the tan and remove any unwanted brown lines!
Remember to wash hands after applying! Dark brown/orangey palms? How is that a good look? But DO put fake tan on your hands as the white as snow fingers may give it away. Try mixing it with moisturiser, as fake tan will lurk in your knuckles and your creases so you look like you’ve been in a fight with a brick wall.
For a light tan, you can always use a fake tan body lotion with moisturiser, that builds very gradually and very naturally and also comes in a lighter shade. Or just add some tinted moisturiser for a subtle glow. Dusting bronzer along your limbs can give you additional bronzed-ness! Try a shimmery bronzer as it will give your body a nice sheen and make you look like Slim Jim.
If, like me, you have marks, scars, bumps and lumps on your legs, try ‘Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs’. Simply spray on and it instantly tans your legs and conceals unsightly blemishes. You can also see where you’re applying it so you don’t get streaks or patches. It’s a godsend. It can look quite orange, so make sure the rest of your body is tanned! But it does come in a nude colour, which is fab just to cover up and make legs look like they do in OK and HEAT! Sally Hansen has now also brought out a fake tan range for face and body to match those pins, so give it a go! Trust me.
